Ruth Diephouse Johnsen's new book, Missions Possible ($10.99, paperback, 978-1-62419-642-3; $5.49, e-book, 978-1-62419-643-0) was birthed out of the author and her husband, Don's, travels. It is an inspirational book describing twelve ingenious ways that Christians, specifically missionaries, have used to tell of the Good News of salvation. Twenty images show some of those missionaries and those they nurtured.
"In 1972, our son began working for an airline and as one of his perks his parents were given the privilege of flying stand-by, free. We began traveling-eventually visiting 29 countries," explains the author. "As an avid photographer, Don began what resulted in boxes and boxes of colored slides. I, on the other hand, started taking notes on what we were seeing because I had been a professional journalist for the Aurora Beacon-News in Aurora, Illinois and this was my habit."
Ruth Diephouse Johnsen is eighty-eight (and a half) years old. This is her first published book, although she has been a published journalist since she served as feature editor of her high school newspaper. She is the mother of three, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of seven. In 2011, the author suffered the loss of her husband, Don, after sixty-seven years of marriage. Johnsen has written her memoirs for her family and is presently preparing to publish a novel based on the lives of her grandmother and aunt in London in Dickens time. She will spend two months on Kauai in Hawaii in 2013, working on this book, "The Dubbin Girls".
