Viking Saga Seen Thru a Boy's Eyes Furthers Knowledge of Hardy Folk

The year is 850 A.D. in England, an orphaned boy named Frey is taken from the safety of a monastery by a group of Vikings and is whisked away to Norway to be the thrall of the jarl's son. From this event, historical fictionist L. K. Hill takes her readers through the mist and mystery enshrouded times of Norsemen or Vikings and their folkways. Frey's Saga, an exciting adventure of an ancient but marginalized civilization is seen via the boy's observant (and monastically trained) eyes.

The thrall bounds Frey body and soul to the jarl's son. Yet the closeness of their age enables both to disregard the rules of Viking society in favor of a friendship that would stand the tests of time. Royal and serf hie off to the many issues of the Viking day which beget many an adventure. The saga of the Viking in this way becomes Frey's, a story of a people in search of better, warmer harbors and greenery in no danger of permafrost or tundra.

Through his trials and triumphs, he is eventually freed and becomes a trusted member of their society. He even befriends a berserker along the way, one who becomes a bosom buddy (within the limits of the berserker persona). The book evokes the spirit and carefully recreates the little that is known of Viking society and succeeds in providing readers with a complete, fictional travelogue through a time forgotten by all but the descendants of Vikings themselves and the stodgy scholars of the academe. Frey is therefore the modern template of all that can be inferred from a sometimes feared, sometimes admired sea-faring people who found the northern Atlantic passage to the Americas.

About the Author

L.K. Hill is a lifelong Connecticut resident. After attending community college, she married and raised two sons.
