Newlywed Experiences Journey of a Lifetime in 1970s Tehran; Indianapolis Broadcaster Releases New Book

Newlywed Experiences Journey of a Lifetime in 1970s Tehran; Indianapolis Broadcaster Releases New Book

Meeting a man nine years her senior and becoming engaged just four months later starts the author on the misadventure of a lifetime. In this new book, she describes her experiences living as a young woman in Tehran in the mid 1970s, just a few years before the revolution that would transform the country. Despite its crowded conditions, Ann feels alone and isolated at first, unable to speak more than a few words of Farsi and knowing only her husband. Gradually, she begins to explore the city, making new friends and beginning an odyssey that will affect the rest of her life.

Ann, who would later become a trailblazer in the Indianapolis radio market as a morning radio show host, uses humor and honesty to describe the disappointments and hardships of day-to-day-living in Tehran, balanced out by descriptions of lively acquaintances and the chance to explore a different culture. A wrong number dialed leads to a friendship with a generous businessman; a work colleague's unexpected death inspires her to live life to the fullest; a charismatic encyclopedia sales manager trains Ann as a sales rep but never pays her commission; and shopping leads to unforgettable discoveries like a handmade Persian rug.

In "Walking Naked in Tehran," Ann also shares her struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD. Although the disorder still affects her, Ann aims to overcome it by living out her dreams and leading by example. That positive attitude shines through the book's lively descriptions of Tehran - whether detailing culinary delights and disasters or relating stories of celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas in a faraway land with new friends - showcasing this exotic country that has been closed off to much of the world for years.

Author Ann Craig-Cinnamon, a freelance writer, has more than three decades of experience in radio and television. Her career as the host of morning radio shows was featured in the documentary "Naptown Rock Radio Wars." Craig-Cinnamon has also been news director of a statewide radio network and a TV anchor and reporter. She and her husband, John, publish an Indianapolis-area magazine and own a travel company. She grew up near Louisville, Ky. Craig-Cinnamon has traveled through all 50 states, more than 70 countries and all seven continents.
