New Picture Book Offers a Glimpse into Philadelphia's Heart and Soul

New Picture Book Offers a Glimpse into Philadelphia's Heart and Soul

Between 1790 to 1800, Philadelphia was the temporary capital of the United States. Nestled along the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, the so-called city of brotherly love has a rich and colorful history. Michael Viola, who worked as a photographer for the Philadelphia Inquirer has seen and captured through photographs this city as it grew and flourished over the years. In his new book, Time's-a-Marchin', he invites readers on a fascinating journey through twenty-five years of Philadelphia regional history.

Viola has been in the business of making pictures for a daily newspaper his entire life. The experience gave him the opportunity to look at Philadelphia in a different light, both as a spectator and someone whose job it was to capture the story that lay beneath every happening or subject. In Time's-a-Marchin', Viola brings together three hundred fifty black and white captioned photographs which he took for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1964 to 1988.

The series of snapshots and their corresponding captions not only defined his storied life and career, it also paints a stunning portrait of the heart and soul of Philadelphia as well as the people, culture, art, religion and history that make the region even more vibrant and unique. By turns informative and engaging, Time's-a-Marchin' is at once a visual celebration of a remarkable city and a chronicle of one man's journey through it.
