New Book Inspires Children by Tackling the Tough Topics

Some children have questions they are too scared to ask. Some adults are too afraid to address worse case scenarios. Cindy Amar gets families talking in her new children's book, "Tommy's Discovery."

In the book, Tommy the Turtle asks his close friends what will happen to him if his parents die. Amar, a teacher and guidance counselor for over 30 years, wrote the book to help parents start difficult conversations and empower children to believe in themselves.

"People are often afraid to talk about death," Amar says. "Death is a part of life. My goal is to combine the initial concept of death and loss along with the discovery of believing in oneself."

In the book, young Tommy begins to worry about what will happen to him if he loses his parents. After visiting his close friends, Tommy is left without a satisfying answer until he realizes the secret has been inside him all along. This reassuring moral will make children confident in their own abilities and beliefs, Amar says, while reaffirming the importance of persistence and problem solving.

"Children have questions and worries. The first step in reassuring them is to allow them to ask questions," Amar says. "All children need to be reminded to believe in themselves."
