Marilyn Laing's new illustrated children's book "Why the turtle and the snail carried their houses on their back" (published by AuthorHouse) is a fun and educational handbook that teaches children to study community helpers, or common buildings in their neighborhood.

Shelly and Tiny are two slow animals who would love to own their own homes. However, each house must be suited to meet their unique needs. They have the plans for each house in their heads. Smooth rocks, shaded trees and swimming pools were some of the things that were needed. They search the entire island, each with high hopes that their dreams will come true. While they do not find their dream homes, they discover the many buildings in their city and identify the business that each building houses.

Laing knows, from her 16 years of teaching experience, that her book will appeal to children of all ages. "It will give an overview of how my island (Bahamas) is laid out," she says. "Primary age students will love the large pictures and enjoy easy reading."
