In Matthew Krause's PITCH, a Man Confronts Worst Monster

In Matthew Krause's PITCH, a Man Confronts Worst Monster

Matthew Krause's new speculative fiction novel "Pitch" (published by Balboa Press) offers readers a thrilling, yet haunting, tale of alcoholism, redemption, time travel and friendship.

In 1989, pitching prodigy Nicholas "Pooch" Shepherd was a violent and destructive alcoholic, but in 1998, Nick Shepherd is a sober and productive member of society. When a group of Nick's fellow recovering alcoholics start experimenting with time travel, a doorway opens up between 1989 and 1998, allowing the monstrous Pooch to claw his way out of the past and wreak havoc in Nick's life. With the help of his best friend Travis and a mysterious time-traveling transient, Nick must track down and send Pooch back to his own time before he can destroy all that Nick loves.

An excerpt from "Pitch":

"'Time,' he muttered. 'Whose time, Travis? Yours? Because that's where it is, Trav.' He slumped against the fence, breathing hard between his teeth. 'I stole a newspaper this morning,' he said. 'I looked at the date. If this is a bad dream, you better wake me up.'

'It's not a dream,' I said.

'Then it's a joke,' he hissed. 'A bad one. Which means I'm gonna be hurting a lot of people real soon.'"

Although "Pitch" is ultimately about facing one's demons and finding redemption, Krause believes the aspect of "Pitch" that will resonate with readers most is the idea of "do-overs," of being given the opportunity to go back in time and start over with the knowledge acquired over the years. "Who among us hasn't said at one time or another, 'If I had my life to live over ...?'"
