FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Named 2012's 'Most Popular Book'

According to the U.K.'s Guardian, the public has chosen E.L. James FIFTY SHADES OF GREY as Specsavers 2012's most popular book. The fictional novel earned more than 75% of the public vote in this year's competition which competed against the other 9 category winners of the National Book Awards. Other contenders included Clare Balding, winner of the autobiography prize, Mantel, named author of the year, Miranda Hart, winner of the non-fiction category, and Lee Child, who received the award for crime book of the year.

Organizers of the competition said it came as "no surprise" that the erotic work of fiction was the winner of the public vote. It has dominated the charts and news headlines since it was released earlier this year.

Upon hear the news, the author commented that it was "really quite overwhelming." She went on to say, "Thank you so much for this wonderful award. I am truly honoured. I have to thank the readers and the retailers for making Fifty Shades of Grey the success it has become."

Previous winners of the book of the year award include Caitlin Moran's How to Be a Woman, and David Nicholls' novel One Day.
