Teri Hooper taught for 25 years and is now on permanent disability, but her mind never strayed from her love for education.
Based on her findings on Tao de Ching and her knowledge of the current school system in place, Hooper writes "Tao-Centered Schools" to introduce readers to the faults in the current system and the benefits that would come from integrating Tao practices into the classroom.
"I felt frustrated as a teacher with the lack of compassion and tolerance for students who didn't fit the mold," Hooper says. "While reading about the Tao de Ching one summer, my heart was moved and I desperately wanted to create the atmosphere of love and kindness that the Tao radiates."
Rooted in kindness towards others and encouragement of individuality, "Tao-Centered Schools" gives readers the tools to think outside the box in terms of our current education system and consider the future they would like to see not only for their children but for everyone.
Through the book, Hooper has one ultimate goal: to impress upon readers that integrating Tao de Ching principles to education will help build toward a more compassionate, understanding and tolerant society.
"Schools cannot be designed as a one-size fits all model - The needs of our society are very different for each individual based on their life ambitions," Hooper says. "There are many modalities of learning and students deserve to learn in a way that is the most productive for them."

Teri Hooper taught as a public elementary school teacher for 25 years, and is now retired and living in Riverside, Calif. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and she earned for master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Chapman University. Hooper is married with three adult children and two grandchildren.
